NINEHOUND / A LIFE IN FOCUS

Alison Lohman: a measure found anew between roles

Coming-of-age, fantasy and horror placed different demands on one actor.

DOCUMENTED LIFE

From White Oleander to Drag Me to Hell

Lohman played Astrid in the 2002 White Oleander, a character moving through foster homes and adolescence. In Tim Burton's Big Fish in 2003 she played young Sandra; Sony's museum record distinguishes her from Jessica Lange as the older Sandra. In 2009 she played Christine Brown in Sam Raimi's Drag Me to Hell, shown out of competition at Cannes. Platform, studio and festival records give these roles specific places. Coming-of-age narrative, fantasy and horror use different rhythms. An actor needs to respond to a work instead of simply repeating the image through which an audience first became familiar with her.

TRADITIONAL INTERPRETATION

Supporting a changing scene

The reference for 18 September 1979 is 己未, 癸酉 and 戊子. 戊 earth suggests a position, 癸 fine change, 酉 distinction and 子 movement. How does a character retain continuity while responding to a changing scene? A birthday cannot guarantee performance quality.

未 earth directs attention to relationships in a work without inferring an actor's life from foster care or a curse in fiction. Her hour is unknown. Plot and actual experience retain their boundaries beyond a complete-chart assertion.

EDITORIAL REFLECTION

A role cannot explain an actor's life

After an audience remembers a character, an actor still enters other stories. Giving each person a measure means sometimes setting aside a method that already worked and hearing a new work's demands. Her experience asks how one familiar face can allow different characters to stand in their own right.
