DOCUMENTED LIFE
A familiar character enters a new series
Kelley played McCoy in Star Trek’s original series beginning in 1966. In 1987,Encounter at Farpoint brought him back for a cameo opposite Data in The Next Generation. The franchise’s oral history records that encounter; Kelley died in 1999.[1][2][3]
TRADITIONAL INTERPRETATION
Ding Fire and Chou Earth: preserving a connection
The reference is 己未, 丁丑, 丁丑. Ding Fire repeats in the month and day stems; repeated Chou offers images of preservation and support. Together they frame a familiar character maintaining a connection. The hour is unknown. Fire cannot establish personal warmth, and Earth cannot confine an actor to one role.
Including an older figure in a new series requires more than recognition. The encounter needs a function within its scene. Fire and Earth can ask whether an earlier connection leaves room for another story. Dialogue, timing and character relations establish the effect; nostalgia alone supplies no guarantee of a successful production.
EDITORIAL REFLECTION
Continuity does not require an unchanged copy
Long series use familiar characters as bridges, while someone still needs to continue from the other side. This McCoy–Data encounter places acknowledgment beside a new beginning. Respect for earlier work need not keep another story stationary. Continuity becomes more substantial through a particular scene than through a repeated assertion that a classic lasts forever.
