NINEHOUND / A LIFE IN FOCUS

Dezső Kosztolányi: Detail Finds Another Amount of Space

A bibliography makes the expansion of a writing practice visible.

DOCUMENTED LIFE

Poetry followed by novels

Kosztolányi published A szegény kisgyermek panaszai in 1910. Hungary's National Széchényi Library also lists the novels Pacsirta in 1924 and Édes Anna in 1926. Its account identifies poetry, fiction, translation and journalism within his practice.[1]

These dates establish different forms of work, not that this account has read every book. Poetry and novels offer different scales: a short form can concentrate a moment, while extended narrative permits relationships and consequences to develop. That is a question about working conditions, not a substitute for judging the specific texts.

TRADITIONAL INTERPRETATION

Fine language and its containers

For March 29, 1885, the date reference gives Yi-You, Ji-Mao and Gui-Wei. Gui water suggests fine verbal perception; Yi and Mao wood offer an image of expression extending. Ji and Wei earth bring attention to the structures and length that hold it.

You metal suggests revision and discrimination. His birth hour is unknown. These images cannot decide literary merit or explain historical positions or health. Judgment belongs to reading the original works.

EDITORIAL REFLECTION

Let a bibliography lead to reading

A publication list provides an entrance map. Knowing the entrances is different from moving through the work. Kosztolányi's record invites choosing a text, attending to its language and allowing the actual writing to revise an initial impression.
