DOCUMENTED LIFE
Records before the road
De André enrolled in law in 1959 and left his studies in 1965. Songwriting had already become another route: he regarded his 1961 recording of two narrative ballads as his real debut, then made Volume I in 1967. His 1971 album drew on Edgar Lee Masters's Spoon River Anthology, bringing literary voices into a different form. Recording and public performance remained separate decisions: his first tour began in 1975. Working with Mauro Pagani on Crêuza de mä in 1984 opened another musical chapter. These changes give his career a more interesting shape than a simple march from obscurity to fame: a writer kept reconsidering the language, collaborators and setting through which a song reached people.
TRADITIONAL INTERPRETATION
Precision meeting a growing season
The computed civil-date reference for 18 February 1940 is 庚辰, 戊寅 and 辛卯. Traditional imagery associates 辛 metal with fine distinctions and finishing, while the 寅 and 卯 branches suggest wood's growth and branching. Read beside his work, these symbols raise a useful question: how can a carefully edged line of language make room for several human circumstances? This is a way to ask about artistic choices, not evidence that a birth date produced them.
No verified birth hour is available, so an hour pillar and a complete structural judgement remain open. The differences between literary adaptation, touring and collaborative composition are more revealing than an unchanging personality label. Each asks a songwriter to surrender a different habit.
EDITORIAL REFLECTION
Who deserves a hearing
His story invites a practical test of expressive power: whom does a work allow us to notice? When a song gives an overlooked person a voice and a conflict, the listener must do more than recognise a category. The artistic decision to attend closely can change the quality of a hearing without pretending to settle every moral question.
