DOCUMENTED LIFE
A voice changing the performance
Anna Christie in 1930 was Greta Garbo's first sound film. Silent work asked an audience to encounter a character through images; sound introduced another performance material. The transition changes relations among an actor, camera, text and audience, not simply the scale of fame.
The official biography dates the end of her MGM contract and a move to project-based work to 1933. Two-Faced Woman in 1941 was her final completed film. It also records years of later plans that did not reach completion. A last finished appearance and the disappearance of all professional plans are different events. An actor leaving the screen need not become a story of suddenly vanishing from every kind of work.
TRADITIONAL INTERPRETATION
A form beside a possible expansion
The civil date of 18 September 1905 gives Yi-Si year, Yi-You month and Geng-Shen day. No hour is known. Geng with Shen and You Metal offers a vocabulary of forms and professional boundaries. The two Yi Wood stems bring possible development, while Si Fire retains public presentation.
The reading can compare a fixed contract with choosing projects and ask how the arrival of sound changes a character's construction. Metal and Wood do not establish a naturally remote personality or a necessary withdrawal from public life. Incomplete productions are not a chart conflict. Contracts, plans and completed works remain the practical evidence; private motives should not be invented.
EDITORIAL REFLECTION
A visible ending can have layers
The completed film list stopped expanding while projects did not necessarily stop at the same moment. That distinction reveals more of a working actor's conditions than a famous image of departure, without fabricating a final state of mind.
