Budget work and European responsibilities
Van Rompuy received a philosophy degree in 1968 and an economics master's in 1971 before working at Belgium's National Bank. He served as deputy prime minister and budget minister from 1993 to 1999, became parliamentary speaker in 2007 and prime minister in 2008. Chosen as the European Council's first full-time president in 2009, he took office with the Lisbon Treaty in December. A second term began in 2012 and ended in 2014.
