NINEHOUND / A LIFE IN FOCUS

Jafar Panahi: a film continuing after conditions are removed

An early feature, filmmaking bans and later festival recognition belong to different circumstances.

DOCUMENTED LIFE

From cinematic questions to personal circumstances

The White Balloon won the Caméra d'Or at Cannes in 1995. In the interview accompanying It Was Just an Accident in 2025, Jafar Panahi recalled his 2010 arrest and bans on travel and filmmaking, describing a shift from outward cinematic problems towards his own circumstances. This is his later account of a change in work, not foresight of every subsequent film.

It Was Just an Accident won the Palme d'Or in 2025. The festival records the film and Panahi's directing and writing credits. Recognition must remain beside the restrictive conditions, not turn a ban into a necessary benefit. Difficulty is not automatically the cause of a good film. Continuing production requires actual arrangements and cooperation.

TRADITIONAL INTERPRETATION

A boundary must not beautify deprivation

The civil date of 11 July 1960 gives Geng-Zi year, Gui-Wei month and Geng-Zi day; no hour is known. Repeated Geng Metal offers a language of forms and boundaries, the two Zi branches with Gui Water bring movement, and Wei Earth retains support.

The reading can ask how a creative form is rearranged after conditions change. Metal does not explain a ban, and Water does not guarantee a route around restrictions. A chart cannot justify suppression or promise rewards to someone subjected to it. Interviews, works and production records establish choices already made.

EDITORIAL REFLECTION

Persistence does not make an obstacle desirable

A film can emerge in difficult circumstances while those circumstances remain restrictions to examine. Keeping that distinction respects creative work and prevents later awards from defending an earlier deprivation.
