DOCUMENTED LIFE
Listen to the structure around the voice
The Doors' debut album appeared in 1967; L.A. Woman followed in 1971. In 1993 the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inducted the band in its performer category.[1]
The museum's account also identifies Ray Manzarek's keyboards, John Densmore's rhythms and Robby Krieger's guitar. Morrison's strong public image can obscure that collaboration. Treating the band as one person's legend loses part of the music's construction. Recognizing the others clarifies how his voice acquired its setting.
TRADITIONAL INTERPRETATION
A sharp voice, an uncertain month
The reference date, December 8, 1943, gives a Gui-Wei year and Geng-Zi day. It falls at a monthly solar-term boundary. With an unknown birth hour, the month must remain either Gui-Hai or Jia-Zi rather than being selected to suit an interpretation.
Geng metal suggests a sharp voice; Gui water and Zi suggest a surrounding current of feeling and imagination. Jia-Zi would add wood's growth, while Gui-Hai concentrates the water image. These possibilities prompt a question about expression within collaboration. They prove no talent and explain neither death nor private experience.
EDITORIAL REFLECTION
Hear the work behind the figure
Return to a familiar recording by listening first to rhythm, then keyboards, then the voice. Morrison's work deserves attention, and so does the work of his partners. That shift is useful wherever a memorable individual depends on a group to make the result possible.
