DOCUMENTED LIFE
Between a voice and a place
Denver moved to Los Angeles in 1963 to seek a musical career, adopting the name of Colorado's capital. Peter, Paul and Mary's recording of Leaving on a Jet Plane reached number one in 1969, bringing his songwriting wider recognition. Songs such as Country Roads and Rocky Mountain High connected place with feeling in the following decade. He founded Windstar in 1976 for education and demonstration around sustainable living, and performed in the Soviet Union in 1985 before touring there in 1986. The sense of connection in the songs became one strand of work beyond recording.
TRADITIONAL INTERPRETATION
Water and distance
The reference for 31 December 1943 is 癸未, 甲子 and 癸亥. 癸 water evokes fine nourishment, while 子 and 亥 suggest movement across distance. These symbols raise an expressive question: how does a song about a place create connection for someone who has never visited? They do not determine his environmental work.
甲 wood and 未 earth can suggest growth and its supports. Valuing an environment still requires arrangements others can join. His hour is unknown. No complete structure is asserted, and the aviation accident that ended his life is not used to validate a prediction.
EDITORIAL REFLECTION
Affection becoming action
Making the world feel approachable is one power of art. Extending that feeling into action calls for another capacity. A song, a performance and a foundation can connect, but each has its own practical conditions. His story invites us to hear the warmth while examining how it travelled beyond a record.
