DOCUMENTED LIFE
A performance need not begin with a visible face
The Television Academy records John Rhys-Davies's 1981 supporting actor nomination for Shogun. It was a nomination, not a win, and cannot make all recognition for the production his personal award. A supporting character in a long narrative has relationships and responsibilities of its own.
Disney lists him in the voice cast of Aladdin and the King of Thieves, released in 1996, and the live-action cast of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny in 2023. Sound and a visible body provide different material to an audience. Animation coordinates a voice with an image; live-action also places movement, space and other performers' reactions within the work.
TRADITIONAL INTERPRETATION
Keeping a seasonal boundary unresolved
The date of 5 May 1944 is close to the beginning-of-summer boundary. The reference gives Jia-Shen year, either Wu-Chen or Ji-Si month, and Ji-Si day. No birth hour is known, so neither month is selected as definitive. Ji Earth can offer an image of carrying a role; Jia Wood and Shen Metal bring development and formal distinctions alongside it.
A Chen month might direct attention towards narrative support, while Si could foreground presentation. Both remain cultural questions, not tests of acting quality or explanations of awards. An unknown birth clock time must not be invented to produce a more convenient interpretation.
EDITORIAL REFLECTION
More than one entrance to a story
Performance can be heard as well as seen. A change of medium changes the contribution's form. Specifying credits and recognition is more informative than applying one description of vocal presence to everything an actor does.
