DOCUMENTED LIFE
Separate the credits
Costner won the directing Oscar for Dances with Wolves in 1991 and an Emmy for Hatfields & McCoys in 2012. CBS’s 2023 programming announcement identifies him as John Dutton in Yellowstone.[1][2][3]
These credits cross cinema and television, as well as directing and acting. A recognisable name connects them, but each responsibility requires its own evaluation rather than borrowing certainty from another achievement.
TRADITIONAL INTERPRETATION
Ji Earth and Mao Wood: making a work hold together
For 18 January 1955 the reference is 甲午, 丁丑, 己卯. Ji Earth’s image of organising and holding, alongside Ding Fire’s support, can frame the foundations required to make a work. Mao Wood adds roles, demands and constraints. The hour is unverified; Earth does not establish an innate talent for directing.
A film’s coherence depends on more than a forceful lead performance. Images, rhythm and many specialised tasks have to connect. The support image asks which judgements can be delegated and which responsibilities remain personal. Awards cannot retrospectively validate every production choice, and no symbolic reading should erase the team.
EDITORIAL REFLECTION
Who takes responsibility for what
Crossing roles means completing different responsibilities, not simply collecting titles. A directing award concerns directing, a performance award concerns acting, and a television character still needs to be considered in actual scenes. This keeps versatility assessable and prevents a famous name from becoming a guarantee of every aspect of production quality.
