DOCUMENTED LIFE
The distance between actor and character
The Texas State Historical Association records Hagman’s continuing role in The Edge of Night in 1961, I Dream of Jeannie in 1965, and J.R.Ewing in Dallas, which became a weekly series in 1978. He returned to the character in the revived series in 2012.[1]
TRADITIONAL INTERPRETATION
Ji Earth and Mao Wood: supporting a role without becoming it
The reference is 辛未, 丁酉, 己卯. Ji Earth’s support beside Mao Wood frames a performer giving a character form, while You Metal introduces expression and selection. The hour is unknown. A branch cannot determine conduct, and success as an antagonist does not establish identity between performer and role.
A character can provoke dislike because aims, actions and reactions have been performed clearly. Earth, Wood and Metal can ask what is conveyed and how technique communicates it, without using an antagonist’s greed to explain a real person. A long-running role still requires renewed work within another series and production setting.
EDITORIAL REFLECTION
A character’s conduct is not the actor’s
A strong audience response needs a clear object. Appreciating a performance does not require admiring a character’s conduct. Preserving work beyond J.R. also gives the actor a broader professional range. Confining a person to a famous role may be convenient for memory without making an assessment accurate.
