DOCUMENTED LIFE
Authority and the failure to correct a course
Mao Zedong became chairman of the Central People's Government in 1949. That milestone cannot settle the assessment of his historical role. The Cultural Revolution, which he launched in 1966, continued until 1976. The Resolution on Certain Questions in the History of Our Party Since the Founding of the People's Republic of China, adopted in 1981, made a severe assessment of it.
The resolution described the period as bringing the most serious setbacks and losses to the Party, the state and the people since the founding of the People's Republic, and assigned principal responsibility to Mao. It also discussed collective leadership's failure to correct mistakes in time. These are attributed findings from an official historical resolution, not a prediction made before the events. An account of extensive authority must retain the harm of decisions and the failure of corrective institutions, alongside the construction of a new political order.
TRADITIONAL INTERPRETATION
Symbols cannot lighten responsibility
Using the library's date of 26 December 1893 gives Gui-Si year, Jia-Zi month and Ding-You day. No birth hour is used. Ding Fire in the winter month of Zi brings Water and Fire into the same symbolic field, while Jia Wood supplies an image of development. The combination invites questions about will, resources and restraint. You Metal adds a vocabulary of distinctions and limits. It does not establish a verdict on political morality or historical achievement.
Water and Fire must not be presented as the cause of social upheaval. A chart cannot reduce responsibility for policy. Public power's consequences require evidence about decisions, institutions, implementation and affected people. This cultural reading can formulate a question: when a direction is asserted so strongly that contrary views cannot reach the decision-maker, what can restore a reliable channel for correction?
EDITORIAL REFLECTION
Can an error still be named?
Mao's history should not be reduced to a success narrative, or judged by symbols in place of records. The 1981 resolution illustrates how a later assessment can differ substantially from a ruler's judgment while in power. The useful demand carried forward is for evidence, responsibility and conditions under which errors can be recognized and corrected.
