DOCUMENTED LIFE
From a first feature to a shared judgment
Moretti released his first feature, Io sono un autarchico, in 1976. The Son’s Room received the Palme d’Or in 2001.[1] The record places international recognition well after the beginning of a sustained filmmaking practice.
In 2012 he chaired the Cannes competition jury.[2] Within the same institution, his position had changed: rather than only submitting work to judgment, he was participating in the judgment of other filmmakers. Individual taste now had to work within a group and a shared decision.
TRADITIONAL INTERPRETATION
Experience supporting another act of expression
The reference pillars are Gui-Si, Geng-Shen and Ren-Yin. Geng Metal supports Ren Water, with further Metal and Water imagery in Shen; the Wood within Yin introduces an expression relationship. This can frame a cultural question about knowledge becoming creative work, and about experience helping someone recognise work different from his own.
The symbols supply no verdict on a film and no guarantee that an award decision is fair. Familiar methods do not require every artist to use those methods. The unverified birth hour prevents a complete chart assessment; the professional judgment still needs a work and a reason.
EDITORIAL REFLECTION
A personal style is not a universal admission ticket
A filmmaker can choose a distinctive practice for his own work. A juror has a different task from looking for copies of that practice. Moretti’s change in position makes the distinction concrete. Experience remains valuable when it helps a person explain a standard, rather than quietly turning personal preference into the only route through which others may be recognised.
