DOCUMENTED LIFE
From a school comedy to a fantasy sequel
Cates appeared in Fast Times at Ridgemont High in 1982. Amblin lists her in the cast of Gremlins in 1984, and she returned as Kate Beringer in Gremlins 2 in 1990.[1][2][3]
The move from a school comedy to fantasy-horror comedy changes the world around a performance. A sequel adds another task: continuity within a changed setting. Amblin places Kate and Billy in a New York tower in the second film. That is a fictional development, not evidence that Cates made the same move in life. The career record needs that distinction without invented private reasons for accepting or leaving work.
