DOCUMENTED LIFE
Law and public choice
Roh passed the judicial examination in 1975, briefly served as a judge and became a lawyer. Elected to the National Assembly in 1988, he later experienced repeated defeats in Busan. He won a Seoul Jongno by-election in 1998 but chose to contest Busan again, losing in 2000. Opposition to regional discrimination was one of his stated political aims. He became maritime affairs minister that year, won the presidential election in 2002 and began his presidential term in 2003. After leaving office in 2008 he returned to Bongha Village and worked with residents on ecological farming. He died there in 2009.
TRADITIONAL INTERPRETATION
Support under changing conditions
The reference for 1 September 1946 is 丙戌, 丙申 and 戊寅. 戊 earth evokes steady support; the 寅–申 opposition suggests movement and competing pulls. Beside these elections, the question is how commitment to a route encounters changing support and the costs of defeat. The symbols cannot adjudicate his politics or replace policy assessment.
The two 丙 fire stems bring public expression into view, but visibility does not secure lasting support. His hour is unverified. No complete chart is asserted, and his death must not be presented as fulfilment of a prediction. Public history and symbolic interpretation remain distinct.
EDITORIAL REFLECTION
Principles meet consequences
A choice gains neither its entire meaning from victory nor automatic vindication from defeat. It must be considered through the problem it addresses, its costs and the practices it leaves for discussion. His story calls for that complexity: attending to principles as well as their consequences once they enter public life.
