NINEHOUND / A LIFE IN FOCUS

Stéphane Audran: supporting work after an actress award

A character's weight need not match its position in an award title.

DOCUMENTED LIFE

Three performance records

BAFTA records Audran's actress award in 1974 for The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie and Just Before Nightfall. The César Academy records supporting-actress recognition for Violette Nozière in 1979.[1][2] These are different positions, not evidence that supporting work represents professional decline.

She received a BAFTA nomination for Babette's Feast in 1989.[3] That is a personal performance nomination; the film's other awards cannot become her individual wins. Categories and dates need to remain distinct.

TRADITIONAL INTERPRETATION

Gui-You and the particulars of a character

The reference is Ren-Shen, Xin-Hai, Gui-You. Gui Water's detail and You Metal's distinction ask how a performance organises particulars; Hai Water adds changes within circumstances. These do not choose leading or supporting roles, determine subjects or reconstruct a birth hour from awards.

EDITORIAL REFLECTION

Read the role inside its work

A useful comparison starts with what the person contributes to a film and then examines recognition. Different parts require different scale and rhythm. Separating individual wins, nominations and film awards respects the performer without taking credit away from others who made the work.
