DOCUMENTED LIFE
Teaching, translation and poetry
Mallarmé published early poems in 1862 and obtained an English teaching qualification in 1863, working in Tournon, Besançon and Avignon before a Paris appointment in 1871. He met Manet in 1873; the painter illustrated his Poe translation The Raven in 1875 and The Afternoon of a Faun in 1876. Tuesday gatherings took place in his small Paris dining room from the mid-1880s. Vers et Prose appeared in 1892, followed by early retirement in 1893 and more time in Valvins. The departmental museum keeps literature within teaching, publication and encounters. Fine poetic work required solitude while gaining relationships through painters, readers and conversation.
TRADITIONAL INTERPRETATION
Visibility with a finely made expression
The reference for 18 March 1842 is 壬寅, 癸卯 and 丙戌. 丙 fire suggests expression, water language in motion and wood branching. How does a finely made expression enter another medium and another person's viewing? Elements cannot explain difficulty or establish literary value.
戌 earth points toward publication, teaching and meetings. His hour is unknown. Tuesday gatherings were not a destined network; work and influence between friends require particular evidence beyond a complete-chart assertion.
EDITORIAL REFLECTION
A work needs encounters too
A small dining room can leave space for conversation around works. Encounters do not write poems on someone's behalf, but they allow a response to language. His experience keeps solitude and exchange together. Literature happens on a page and continues when someone else is willing to listen carefully.
