DOCUMENTED LIFE
Drawings entering cinema
Burton studied animation at CalArts and entered Disney, making the stop-motion short Vincent in 1982 and the live-action Frankenweenie in 1984. Pee-wee's Big Adventure began feature direction in 1985. Batman in 1989 and Edward Scissorhands in 1990 brought different scales of cinema into his work. Drawings and professional projects entered a MoMA exhibition in 2009. He remade Frankenweenie as a stop-motion feature in 2012. Moving from a sketch to a screen involved finding a workable process, so strangeness was more than a surface appearance.
TRADITIONAL INTERPRETATION
Growth meeting a shaping month
The reference for 25 August 1958 is 戊戌, 庚申 and 甲戌. 甲 wood evokes extending ideas, 申 metal shaping, and repeated 戌 branches structures that hold them. How does a vivid image become a form people can make together? The symbolism neither explains his visual style nor guarantees box office results.
Repeated 戌 earth can suggest returning materials and the need to keep style from becoming inertia. His hour is unknown. Animation, live-action film and exhibitions each have production conditions that a personality label cannot replace.
EDITORIAL REFLECTION
Style meets production

His work gives imagination the shape of labour: something drawn by one person becomes an experience through many people's successive decisions. The method belongs inside the artistic story.
