DOCUMENTED LIFE
Two performances, separate assessments
Bérénice Bejo won the best actress César for The Artist in 2012. Cannes awarded her best actress for Asghar Farhadi's The Past in 2013. Both refer to personal performances, but different films and institutions. The wider awards of a successful film cannot be transferred to an actor by implication.
The 2014 César record lists a best actress nomination for The Past. A film's year, a Cannes win and a subsequent César nomination are different entries. Keeping the nomination distinct from victory preserves the actual assessment rather than describing an uninterrupted run of awards.
TRADITIONAL INTERPRETATION
Keeping a seasonal alternative open
The date of 7 July 1976 is close to the minor-heat boundary. The reference gives Bing-Chen year, either Jia-Wu or Yi-Wei month, and Geng-Shen day. No hour is known, so neither month is selected as certain. Geng on Shen offers an image of formal distinctions and details; Bing Fire adds public visibility.
Jia-Wu might direct a question towards development and presentation, while Yi-Wei can emphasize supporting a developing contribution. Neither cultural angle determines acting quality or an award. Scripts, direction, fellow performers and the performance itself remain the material. An unknown clock time must not be invented to remove the alternative.
EDITORIAL REFLECTION
Precision also respects the work
Two wins can be recognized while the 2014 entry remains a nomination. Careful credit does not diminish Bejo; it lets each work and recognition keep its own place.
