DOCUMENTED LIFE
From early novels to an old fisherman
The Sun Also Rises appeared in 1926 and A Farewell to Arms in 1929. The Old Man and the Sea followed in 1952. The 1954 Nobel award specifically recognised Hemingway’s narrative art.[1][2]
The sequence is more than a list of experiences. A writer must select and organise material so that another person can enter it. Fictional characters should not automatically be equated with the author; doing so reduces both the work and the life.
TRADITIONAL INTERPRETATION
The same Geng-Yin day as Henry Ford
The date-reference pillars are Ji-Hai, Xin-Wei and Geng-Yin. Ford also has a Geng-Yin day reference, although the other pillars differ. Their circumstances, opportunities and decisions differ much more. The comparison is a useful reminder that one stem-branch combination does not yield a single profession or life.
Geng Metal can be used as an image of cutting, shaping and making. Xin Metal is its Rob Wealth relationship and Ji Earth its Direct Resource relationship. Applied to writing as a chosen cultural lens, these invite questions about absorbing material and developing a practice among peers. Saying that Metal caused a spare literary style would go beyond that lens into unsupported causation. The actual craft must be examined in the work.
EDITORIAL REFLECTION
Look at what the person made
Biography can become so dramatic that it eclipses the books. A better sequence is to examine the work first, then ask how experience may have entered it. Intensity of living is not the same as completion of a work. Between them stand technique, revision and selection.
