Water, snakes, and falling teeth: do not rush to assign a dream good or bad luck
Water can mean crossing a river in one dream and facing a flood in another. Keep only a keyword and half the story has already disappeared.
Old books organize dreams into entries
The received Duke of Zhou’s Dream Interpretation groups scenes into entries, reflecting traditional ways of explaining dreams through symbols. Observe how it connects nature, home, status, and relationships.
Entry-based texts generally lack the circumstances of a modern individual’s life. The same keyword may play an entirely different role in your dream. The book’s title must not be treated as proof that its named author has been historically established.
Record the whole dream first
After waking, record the setting, people, actions, feelings at the time, and ending. If you dreamed of water, were you on shore, in a boat, or in the water? Were you looking for an exit or feeling at ease? These details offer far more than the single word water.
This is a writing exercise for organizing dream material, not a medical diagnosis or an inference from a dream about who did what in real life.
Use symbolism as an entrance to a question
If you wish to continue through traditional symbolism, consult related entries and ask exactly where they correspond to your complete dream. If only one image matches, do not import the whole passage’s favorable or unfavorable prediction.
For example, when repeatedly unable to find a door in a dream, first record the process of searching and being blocked. You might connect it with a recent unresolved problem, but actual experience must test that connection.
After reading, keeping a record is enough
Preserve the date, complete dream, and your associations together. Later distinguish ideas already present at the time from explanations added afterward. This keeps the original dream intact.
The dream section is a place for folklore, stories, and practicing self-observation. Do not infer that relatives or friends face disaster merely because an old entry sounds frightening.
