What are the Eight Characters? Three places to start with a chart

A dense chart can make it seem that more characters mean deeper wisdom. The first step is actually simple.

Find the Four Pillars and the Day Master

Bazi writes the birth year, month, day, and hour as four stem-and-branch pairs. Each pair has two Chinese characters, making eight in all. Xinwei, Jihai, Bingchen, and Jihai, for example, form a Four Pillars structure. The heavenly stem comes first and earthly branch second. The day pillar’s stem is the Day Master, the reference for analyzing the other relationships.

If the Day Master is Bing, the Ten Gods are named around its Five Phases and yin-yang relationships with the other characters. The same character can therefore play a different role in a chart with a different Day Master. Wealth, Officer, and Resource are first relationship names; more Wealth characters do not immediately translate into more savings.

02

Look at the season before counting the Five Phases

The seasonal command usually refers to the seasonal environment expressed by the month branch. Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water have different conditions in different seasons. The same Bing Fire cannot be read identically in midsummer and early winter. Begin with the season, then examine whether the other stems and branches support, restrain, or transform that force.

The slogan to supplement whichever phase is missing often moves too quickly. A phase not written directly on the surface may still be hidden in an earthly branch. Even if genuinely scarce, its role must be judged in the whole chart. Counting colors and quantities alone can miss the essential relationships.

03

Check how the chart was constructed

Which year-changing boundary is used? Which month transition instant? Did the birthplace have historical daylight saving? Does the day change at 23:00? These all affect chart construction. For births near boundaries, checking the records is more useful than memorizing ten terms.

NineHound’s personal chart entry handles birthplace, historical time zones, longitude, and true solar time. A historical text’s traditional hour needs separate treatment: a Hai-hour entry is not a modern time-zone birth certificate. It cannot casually be entered as 22:00 Beijing time and then declared precisely corrected.

04

How to keep reading after learning the terms

Try describing a relationship in a complete sentence: “This Bing Fire was born in a Hai month, so I should examine the cold, damp environment and whether Wood and Fire offer support.” That is closer to analysis than memorizing Fire destiny or missing Fire.

Then discuss a particular life stage alongside age, living conditions, and present questions. A thirteen-year-old’s career-palace theme should concern learning, work habits, and exploring abilities. Moving straight to salary, investment, and workplace competition misses the person, however complete the terminology.

The Four Pillars example uses the documented traditional-hour version adopted in this journal’s Zeng Guofan article. An introduction does not replace a complete chart interpretation.
