DOCUMENTED LIFE
Cinema remained near theatre
Bergman began film direction with Crisis in 1946. The Seventh Seal and Wild Strawberries in 1957 brought different questions of life to the screen. After Through a Glass Darkly in 1961, Fårö became a recurring filming location. Persona in 1966 pursued another form of human relationship. Fanny and Alexander appeared in 1982; theatre and writing continued, with Saraband in 2003. Sven Nykvist and recurring actors also gave the films continuity of collaboration. Questions of solitude on screen were made through many people working together.
TRADITIONAL INTERPRETATION
Movement within bounded space
The reference for 14 July 1918 is 戊午, 己未 and 壬戌. 壬 water suggests continuous movement, while 未 and 戌 earth evoke boundaries and support. How do feelings move within a confined space, and where are they blocked? This is a question of form, not a diagnosis transferred from characters to director.
午 fire's visibility suggests that an unspoken relation can appear through an image, pause or gesture. His hour is unverified. No complete structure is asserted, and collaborators and production conditions cannot be omitted in favour of a date chart.
EDITORIAL REFLECTION
Making failed communication visible
Art need not resolve a difficulty of communication to give it a recognisable shape. That form can help viewers consider a circumstance of their own. His story also shows that solitude is not the whole production process. Organised collaboration gives a work about solitude a form that can be shared.
