Zi Wei Dou Shu for beginners: which palace should you read first?
The twelve palaces are like twelve rooms. Start with the one your question concerns, then see how it connects to the others.
Palaces first identify the subject
The Life Palace concerns the overall approach to affairs; the Career Palace is often used for work and direction; the Wealth Palace for resources and ways of earning. These names are traditional categories and must be translated into the person’s age and circumstances.
For a thirteen-year-old, a career theme should first concern study habits, interests, abilities, and how tasks are undertaken. A retiree may care more about daily arrangements and activities still pursued. Giving identical workplace advice to every age is not a complete interpretation.
Principal stars do not work alone
Seeing Wuqu in the Life Palace is no reason to rush into a personality label. Also consider other stars in the same palace, the Three Sides and Four Orientations, the Four Transformations, and time cycles. The Three Sides and Four Orientations connect the focal palace, its opposite, and its two trine palaces, reminding us that one topic is affected by other areas of life.
Income discussion, for example, should also consider what work is done, where, and how people cooperate. Focusing only on one star in the Wealth Palace easily omits the conditions that produce income.
Separate the natal chart, decade cycles, and annual layer
The natal chart supplies long-term structure; decade cycles organize stages into ten-year periods; the annual layer focuses on a particular year’s changes. Naming a ten-year period does not mean the same kind of event happens every day throughout it.
When reading an annual theme, ask what ongoing matter in this person’s real situation it might correspond to. The more specific the advice, the more this background matters.
Three things to take from a first reading
First check the birth information and chart rules; next choose the life topic that matters most now; finally record long-term tendencies separately from near-term action. Learn star and palace names gradually rather than memorizing every one on the first day.
NineHound displays Bazi and Zi Wei side by side. They may discuss one matter from different angles. If their readings differ, explain the layer that produces the difference rather than forcing the two passages into agreement.
Sources and further reading
NineHound wrote the method introduction and illustrative scenarios; divination cases in historical texts are read as accounts recorded in those works.
