Plum Blossom Divination for beginners: can a sound cast a hexagram?
Numbers, images, and ti–yong are three keys to Plum Blossom Divination. Set the casting rules first, then observe what is happening.
Many things offer images, but casting still has rules
The transmitted Plum Blossom Divination includes casting from year, month, day, and hour; object counts; sounds; and written characters. Its appeal lies in the many triggers daily life provides: a number, a sound, or a scene can enter discussion of images.
Many entry points do not permit arbitrary changes of rules. Decide the casting method, how to select upper and lower trigrams, and how to obtain the changing line before seeing the result.
Ti and yong: establish the reference
Ti and yong, often rendered substance and function, organize the relationship between the hexagram and the matter asked about before discussion of Five Phases generation and control. Follow one version’s rules when learning and understand what acts on what, rather than memorizing a slogan that generation is always good and control always bad.
Seasonal strength, interlocking hexagrams, and changed hexagrams add layers. Explain the basic relationship between the two trigrams first, then develop it. That is clearer than putting every layer into the first sentence.
Example: two numbers and a remainder convention
A common numerical teaching approach uses the Earlier Heaven trigram numbers: Qian 1, Dui 2, Li 3, Zhen 4, Xun 5, Kan 6, Gen 7, Kun 8. Take numbers modulo eight, treating a zero remainder as eight; for the changing line use modulo six, treating zero as six. How the two numbers or their total are allocated depends on the casting method and must be stated first.
With the same two numbers, one article may derive upper and lower trigrams directly, while another adds an hour number before choosing the line. Their results can differ. Compare the rules before comparing results.
What to learn from the original stories
Stories of observing plum blossoms and borrowing objects help reveal image selection: what the author noticed, how an image became a judgment, and how the result was narrated. They are cases recorded in the book; focusing on the ending must not erase the reasoning.
NineHound’s current Changes reading uses its own three-number structure, showing the primary hexagram, changing line, and resulting hexagram. It can be studied beside Plum Blossom Divination, but distinguish the particular methods when using them.
