Lunar Birthdays: Leap Months & Missing Day 30

Record the original lunar date first, then choose the celebration convention your family actually uses.

Keep the leap-month label

Ordinary month 2 and leap month 2 are different months. March 22, 2023 is the first day of leap month 2, which does not exist in the following lunar year.

Two explicit choices

A strict date lookup should return no match when the leap month is absent. A family celebration may instead use the ordinary month. The calculator makes that substitution an explicit choice.

When day 30 is missing

A short lunar month has 29 days. Strict lookup cannot create day 30; a last-day celebration uses day 29. Different families may choose differently.

Keep a useful record

Save the original birthday, the target lunar year and the convention. An ordinary-month substitute does not change the true lunar date of the original birth.
