An introduction to Da Liu Ren: why do Four Lessons and Three Transmissions resemble an unfolding story?

Initial, middle, and final transmissions sound like three stages of a story. The real method lies in deriving them from one consistent set of rules.

Learn the heaven and earth plates before the Four Lessons

Liu Ren organizes an inquiry through stems, branches, and other symbols. Its common structure includes heaven and earth plates, Four Lessons, Three Transmissions, and celestial generals. Distinguish chart structure, derived lesson results, and symbolic meanings attached to positions before proceeding.

The Four Lessons derive from the day’s stem and branch and related positions. The Three Transmissions are then selected according to the resulting lesson configuration and transmission rules. One cannot put a favored character into the initial transmission or choose three symbols after deciding the conclusion.

How the Three Transmissions organize a reading

The initial, middle, and final transmissions often organize discussion of a matter’s beginning, development, and outcome. That sequence helps track change, but does not inherently mean the next three days or three months. Timing a result requires a further judgment.

Consider a teaching situation: an object cannot currently be found. Explain its last confirmed location, who handled it afterward, and whether searching has already begun. Chart symbolism must connect to those conditions before one can discuss a search area or action.

Ancient writers also criticized reliance on one symbol

The synopsis of the Complete Collection of Liu Ren discusses problems such as fixation on lesson types, exclusive attention to representative symbols, and indiscriminate use of auxiliary spirits and influences. Even within the tradition, more symbols and more mysterious language do not necessarily mean greater completeness.

When reading a case, check whether its question survives, chart construction is complete, selection rules are stated, and actual outcomes are separately recorded. These questions make the framework of the inference easier to see.

A route for beginners

Begin with stems and branches, the monthly general, and the hour of divination; then study the heaven and earth plates, Four Lessons, and selection of transmissions. Add celestial generals and individual cases last. Constructing one lesson by hand and writing down the rules each time is more useful than collecting dozens of charts you cannot understand.

This section provides Liu Ren knowledge and access to primary texts first; complete chart construction is not yet live. Use hour and solar-term tools to verify basic time information, then continue with the original books.
